Haunted Hot Sauce Halloween 2011

Just a few days shots of my small display this year. More than quantity, this year was about lighting and ambiance.

OUTSIDE: The entire house was illuminated by three blue spotlights hidden in the trees.

INSIDE: Red spotlights shone through the boarded windows which made the house scream "EEEEEVIL!" I didn't have time to detail the Styrofoam "boards" but that made no difference at night as they appeared as silhouettes when lit from behind.

WITCH JARS: I made a dozen of these quickly the night before Halloween. Hung at varying heights from the huge Magnolia tree and lit with tea lights, they were VERY effective in creating interest, movement, contrast and a ghostly atmosphere.

THE COFFIN UNDER THE STAIRS: Illuminated by a hidden red spotlight from above, inside this coffin is where I hid one of those sound activated "haunted hedge" shakers. Everyone that approached it was greeted by a violent shaking, rattling sound and guttural growls coming from within the coffin. My fog machine dispersed thick fog from under this coffin at regular intervals.

I actually got to hide in here for a while to scare trick-or-treaters.

THE CEMETERY: Each tombstone was illuminated by a blue/green LED light "expertly" duct taped to a spray-painted black paint stirrer stick and shoved into the ground in front of the tombstone. A few had LED candles and others had oil lanterns hanging from them.

The wilted and faded cemetery flower urns I made can be found elsewhere in my blog.

I realize that the inside of this coffin looks too "new" but at night, illuminated by the flickering oil lamp, that goes unnoticed.

SUMMARY: This year's display was creepy and beautiful. Red light streaming through the boarded windows, blue light illuminating the entire house, each tombstone illuminated by it's own blue/green light, flickering candles and oil lamp flames and glowing witch jars swaying in the slight breeze. Haunted organ music, crows and the moans of restless undead souls were heard.

I'll use the lighting tricks I learned along with much greater detail for next year so keep an "eye out" for Moonlit Hill Cemetery - Halloween 2012!

THIS is maybe the most realistic looking prop I've seen from Spirit Halloween in a while. It hangs in a cloth box made to look like a crate. It's motion sensitive. When it's triggered the eyes light up red, it shakes and it goes into a sort of "comedy routine" which ruins the effect in my opinion. The voice sounds to me like George Costanza from Seinfeld.

It costs $99.99 which with a 20% discount coupon might be worth it if I can hack into it and make it growl menacingly instead of complain. It's supposed to utter 4 phrases but I've only heard one.

Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale

It's that time again, when various pumpkin beers hit the market. I like the packaging of this one but I'm not getting any "pumpkin" from the taste. I've tried adding my own pumpkin spice syrup to beer but the sweetness of the syrup doesn't mix well with it. Maybe I should try adding just the typical pumpkin pie spices. (ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon) and leave out the sugar and water. Any recommendations?

Pumpkin Spice Liqueur: Vintage Bottles

I'm extremely happy with how this entire project turned out! I'll continue to make this and if there are any changes to the recipe, I'll post them.

This photo is a little washed out but you get the idea. I let it sit in a big bottle for a couple months and then poured it into smaller bottles. The liqueur cleared up a LOT leaving the sediment in the bottom of the big bottle and giving the final product a nice orange color and clarity.

Pumpkin Spice Liqueur - finished!

Another batch of pumpkin spice liqueur is finished. I used brown sugar this time and less simple syrup so the end result is darker, richer and stronger!

I think I need to start another batch! This time I'll go back to using the white cane sugar so the color is a little less dark and murky and more orange and pumpkin-y!

I'll let it sit in these bottles for a while so the remaining pumpkin sediment settles. Then I'll re-bottle into smaller bottles, label and enjoy!

Making Skulls

I've decided to try my hand at making a latex skull mold so I can cast my own expanding foam skulls year-round. I purchased a kit from Smooth-on and have filled in some of the deeper recesses in my skull with clay to make removal of the foam skulls easier. I'll carve the finished skull copies with a Dremel tool to re-deepen those areas.

The next step? To secure my skull to a smooth surface, apply a mold release to the skull and start coating it with layer after layer of thick latex.

In March of 2009, 300 of us "costumed extras" We were bussed to this abandoned fertilizer company in Newborn GA. to film the Phantom Jam Halloween Party scene for Rob Zombie's Halloween 2.

Apparently, we're here!

We caught glimpses of Rob as he raced back and forth between buildings. Later, some of us would get to work with him, up close and personal.

Made some friends!

On our way into the ultimate Halloween party...the Phantom Jam!!! With your host...ROB ZOMBIE!

Inside the ultimate Halloween party! We jumped and screamed and partied to the sounds of Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures!! (for 2 days)

The MC for the Phantom Jam was Uncle Seymour Coffins! This guy is an absolute riot!

All-in-all, it was an amazing experience. The big toe on my left foot is still numb from wearing monster boots for 2 days. And in one instance, Rob put me in a particular spot in front of the camera because he "liked my zombie contacts". (I had already removed them and my red, bloodshot eyes underneath were far scarier than any contacts I could have bought) Good times!

Yup! That's me! I was an extra in the Phantom Jam scene in Rob Zombie's Halloween 2. We shot for the good part of two days straight and other than the pay stub and this photo, there's very little prof that I was even there. Still, an amazing experience. I'd love to do it again...as a zombie...for The Walking Dead...being filmed in Atlanta...where I live! (anybody listening?) ;)

It was printed double-sided on thick card stock, wrapped in a wrinkled craft paper "envelope", sealed with a vintage poison label and tied "butcher-style" with twine. I'd love to see your invites!

Making Zombie Arms

Tonight I'm making prop zombie arms out of bended pvc pipes to go with the zombie hands I made last year.

Two 9" pieces of pvc pipe.

Curved slightly by heating them up with a heat gun.

Holes drilled into the ends.

Fastened with zip ties.

Zip tie ends stuck into the open end of the pvc pipe and everything taped down with duct tape.

Next I'll coat the arms with construction adhesive (like liquid nails), stain them and give them a little touch up paint.

Pumpkin Spice Liqueur - Round 2

I'm in the process of perfecting my Pumpkin Spice liqueur recipe (originally obtained from HalloweenDrinks.net). This time, a little less sweet and with a slightly higher alcohol content.

The Ingredients

The spices in the bottom of the jar before adding the pumpkin and the 100 proof vodka. Looks delicious doesn't it?

This murky swill will soon become delicious pumpkin spice liqueur! Really!

Halloween Cemetery Fence Reference

Diabolical Experiments w/ Scent

The Undertaker is now conducting diabolical experiments with scent induced "experience triggers". The goal? To refine my "Unearthed Coffin" scent. (basically overturned earth, cedar coffin wood and mausoleum moss) Who wants their house or haunt to smell like Moonlit Hill Mortuary? Additional scents on the way as they develop. Suggestions appreciated. I probably won't sell them...might be giveaways or included with orders.

My Own Pumpkin Spice Liquor!

I'm beginning the 5 week process of making my own Pumpkin Spice Liquor. I want to have made a few batches and worked out all the bugs by next Halloween. Wish me luck!!

Step 1: Add all of the above together, stir and let steep for 2 weeks.

Spider web at last!

Instead of doing the smart thing and buying one of those cool spider web guns like those available at www.minionsweb.com, I tried to make one. I tried on and off for almost 2 years with no success...and went through more that a few glue guns in the process. Maybe you'll have better luck with this method than I did.

But this year...SUCCESS! (and you won't believe how.)

All I did was squirt glue from the glue gun and hit the stream of glue with my compressor nozzle set at about 70 psi! I used the nozzle made for filling up inflatable rafts, etc.

That's it! No dismantling of the glue gun and no fittings to find and assemble!

It's a two handed method though...holding the plugged in glue gun in one hand and spraying the stream about an inch below where it exits the glue gun with the compressor nozzle with the other hand. It takes a little practice.

Depending on the wattage of your glue gun, you can spray for a few minutes before you have to let the glue heat up again. And it helps to be holding the glue gun level horizontally or down. If you try to spray "up", the glue falls back onto the gun (and your hand! Ouch!) Just get on a ladder for higher areas and spray down.

Here are a couple shots of my results.

You'll want to save this method for outdoors or the garage too because...well....you're spraying glue! You can spray a prop outdoors and just bring it inside when it's cooled.

Here is a Halloween costume character I've been toying with for a couple years now. I call him Doug-y! (ask me why if you're interested)

He ended up being a cross between Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface and the Babyface character from The Hills Run Red.

It wasn't until I purchased, cut off the jaw and painted this doll mask that I was happy with the way he turned out.

His clothes may change a bit soon...but I think Doug-y is particularly horrifying especially when he's clomping towards you at night brandishing his huge cleaver! I guess we'll see this weekend (Halloween) when I release him onto an unsuspecting world!

This past weekend I've been carving zombie heads from Styrofoam wig heads using a Dremel tool. It take about 30 minutes...and keep the Shop-Vac on the entire time unless you want your work area to look like the blizzard of 2010! I bought the wig heads for $9.99 each at Hobby Lobby.

Making Funeral Flowers

During a recent trip to a cemetery I noticed how much atmosphere the flowers left for the deceased add to it. Real flowers die and turn brown quickly while artificial arrangements wilt and fade in the sun.

I decided to try and capture a bit of this atmosphere in my own Halloween cemetery. I went to the Dollar Tree store and purchased about 15 bunches of artificial flowers at $1.00 each. [photo] Big Lots provided four $3.00 plastic urns.

Using a heat gun, I blasted the flower arrangements causing them to wilt. Then I lightly spray painted the tops of the blossoms and leaves with a flat light tan color [photo] to try and create a faded look on the colored flowers and a dusty look on the white flowers.

The results are below. The photos really don't do it justice but all-in-all I think it's pretty successful. I still have to weather the urns in the photos below.

A coating of spider web and some interesting lighting and I think these arrangements will add to the creepy atmosphere of my cemetery...or of my casket viewing area. What do you think?

UNDEAD Pale Ale

I stumbled across a t-shirt design displaying a label very similar to this one. The t-shirt design said "POSTHUMOUS PALE ALE" and I'll admit to you that I had to look up the word posthumous (AFTER DEATH) to get it. So...I changed the name to something that simpletons like me can understand. I'll print out a bunch of these and stick them onto bottles of Pale Ale for my Halloween party.

Halloween merchandise is starting to appear in Target stores. In my opinion they usually have a pretty impressive selection. I'll be visiting them daily til just before Halloween.

A green tombstone? I think it works! (also available, pink and blue for your zombie-themed baby showers)

This bat tombstone is elaborate and just plain cool! Nice job Target!

SKULLS at Big Lots!

I already have a few skulls but these impressed me as the most anatomically correct I've seen for the money! They're slightly smaller than life-sized but certainly worth the $8.00 price tag. Made of resin, they're hard and durable, and the paint job is pretty nice too! I picked this one up at my local Big Lots store. I think I might make a mold of this one and cast a bunch of hard foam ones for future corpse-buildin' fun!

It's not the best photo I've ever taken...I shot it while waiting at a red light. I thought it was good reference for painting styrofoam to look like weathered stone for a mausoleum, dungeon, etc.

A white Jack-o-lantern light at Garden Ridge stores here in Atlanta. I like the Jack Skellington look he has and that he's kind of squatty...almost like he's soft and sinking. I think I might add a few areas of mold to him.

2001 Maniacs - A blast!!!

I saw a particularly entertaining horror movie on Fearnet last night.

"2001 Maniacs" (2005) starring Robert England (Freddy Krueger).

"2001 Maniacs" is about a group of Spring Breakers who get lost in rural Georgia on their way to Florida and end up in a town that time seems to have forgotten. There they find some VERY dedicated throw-backs to the Civil War era who are convinced that "The South will Rise Again" and are committed to making sure that happens, one body at a time!

It was more of a comedy than a serious horror flick but it has a lot of interesting characters…lots of hot topless girls…and some VERY creative kills. (including a poor mouse who met his demise in a vice)

It’s not really scary (although there were a few startles) but if you want to watch something campy, gory and THOROUGHLY entertaining…check out "2001 Maniacs".

Jason?! At Toys-R-Us?!

I was shopping at Toys-R-Us for my son's birthday and was amazed at what I found! It was a life sized, movie quality replica of Jason's hockey mask! I opened the box expecting to be disappointed by the paint job or the quality but was happily surprised. The paint job and weathering were actually pretty decent...maybe an 8 on a 1-10 scale. The quality was also impressive...hard plastic and about 3/8" thick! The elastic straps (probably the cheapest part of the mask) are riveted on sturdily. The best thing was that the mask was only $19.99! I bought one immediately. The stock boy said that they receive about 6 every 2 weeks that they sell quickly. Maybe I'll pick up a few to offer on www.HauntedHotSauce.com.

My severed finger

My rotting, severed finger prop is finished. I coated my finger w/ 4 coats of liquid latex, powdered it up, pulled it off, turned it inside out, stuffed it w/ cotton, put a broken wooden dowel and liquid latex bits in the end and painted it.

Over the last few months I've created a huge laundry list of cool things to do before Halloween. I've decided that the only way to get even half of them done is to get the ball rolling on one or two each day. Yesterday's project...dirty up my already excellent DentalDistortions.com Gnash teeth. As recommended by DentalDistortions.com's owner, I used acrylic paint and sealed it with clear nail polish. Now they're niiiice and naaasty!
